Lucy's countdown to The Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championship
With the Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships at Badminton fast approaching, it’s a hectic time for 19 year old Law student Lucy James and her 16.3hh gelding Jubilee VI aka Jubilee. Commuting to Plymouth University for lectures from her home in North Devon allows time for training at either end of the day, but it has meant long days and careful planning to ensure Lucy and Jubilee are well prepared for the imminent challenge Badminton poses.
First place at Winkleigh in July saw the pair through to their regional BE90 final at West Wiltshire the following month and a fourth place finish there brought their Badmintons dreams ever closer.
Of his temperament Lucy commented: “As well as being a handful to train as a youngster, Jubilee has grown up to be quite cheeky with a habit of letting himself and the rest of the horses on the yard out of their stables!” While this makes for amusing stories his rebellious nature has previously cost Lucy a top placing at last season’s Pony Club National Championships when an out of character refusal at a ditch dropped them down from third. At times like that Lucy has been tempted to hand him over to sister Jess who also events at Pony Club and BE90 level, often with Lucy making for a strong competitive streak in both sisters.
However she persevered with him and even the winter snow didn’t stop Lucy: “I’ve made sure Jubilee got the right fittening work by sneaking him on to the farm Dad works on close by to canter him when we had the snow!” Despite seeming a little tired after his first few events Jubilee is back on form now.
As far as Championship goals go Lucy said “I’m just really happy to be there and all my family will be there to support me so it should be a great day”. Lucy aims to establish herself at BE100 level this summer as well as chasing her British Dressage Novice qualifier.
We wish Lucy and Jubilee the best of luck for the Championships next week. Look out in our news section for an update on how they get on.
